In pursuance of the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission launched as a National movement on Oct. 2nd 2014, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, in association with the Swachh Bharat Mission(Gramin), Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation, is launching a ‘Swachh Bharat Summer Internship’ programme. The University of Grants Commission has qualified this Interrship as being eligible for academic credits like an optional paper. Sarada Krishna Homoeopathic Medical College has implemented the ‘Swachh Bharat Summer Internship 2018’ and designated Dr. M.V. Ajith kumar, Prof. & Head of the Department of Community Medicine as the Nodal Officer. A team of Interns shall visit the selected villages in Kanniyakumari & Thoothukkudi Districts. The following villages have been selected for the conduct of the programme: 1. Aruvikkara village of Ayakkode Panchayat 2. Dhalvaipuram Panchayat 3. Suganthalai village in Alwarthirunagari block, Thoothukkudi Dist. 4. Rajapalyam Municipality area 5. Mapillaiyoorani Village, Thoothukkudi Dist. 6. Tharuvaikulam village, Ottapidaram block, Thoothukkudi Dist. 7. Sankaralingapuram village, Pudur block Sarada Krishna Homoeopathic Medical College started Swatch Bharath Summer Internship Programme 2018 for students based on directions from Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education, Government of India. PERIOD OF PROGRAMME: 1.5.2018 – 31.7.2018 OBJECTIVES: 1. To enroll the students for promoting swachhta in villages. 2. To improve the overall sanitation and hygiene in the selected village. 3. To engage youth across the country, develop their skill and orientation for sanitation related work and to make swatch Bharat Mission a jan andolan. 4. Students are invited to select a village of their choice, and work with the village community for building a lasting system for improving the overall sanitation and hygiene in the village. Each student should devote atleast 100 hours to swachhata and carry out specific measures for improving the sanitation and hygiene in the village. ACTIVITIES A. INFORMATION- EDUCATION- COMMUNICATION ACTIVITIES (IEC) IEC activities are oriented towards increasing the awareness of people about sanitation related issues and trigger a change in sanitation related behavior. IEC activities undertaken by the interns can target behavior around open defecation, hygiene practices, solid/ liquid waste management among other behaviours. Under this intern may: • Organize awareness campaigns around better sanitation practices like using a toilet, hand washing, health & hygiene awareness etc. • Perform Nukkad nataks or Stet playsaround sawchhata. • Organize Swachhata melas, song and dance performance. • Conduct door to door meetings to drive behavior change with respect to sanitation behaviours. • Make wall paintings in public places (more specially panchayat offices) on the theme of swachhata. • Participate in Nigrani committees to stop open defecation in villages • Organize swachhata related movie screening in public places. • All IEC material of Swachh Bharat Mission may be freely downloaded from the link tinyurl.com/sbmiec & tinyurl.com/sbiiec2. Any other activities undertaken to help spread these messages to the rural masses would count under the header of IEC activities. SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT RELATED ACTIVITIES: SWM activities target generation of awareness around waste collection, segregation, disposal and waste free environment. • Organize waste collection drives in households and common or shared spaces • Volunteer for segregation of solid wastes into non bio-degradable and bio- degradable waste • Mobilize community and panchayat to build compost pits, where organic matter decomposes to form manure. • Help Panchayats draw up plans for installation of biogas plants. • Organize cleaning of streets, drains, and back alleys through awareness drives.
